Waterford Dungarvan and Lismore Railway

The Waterford Dungarvan and Lismore Railway was, at its name suggests, a railway formed to run between Waterford and Lismore via Dungarvan. This it did, opening in 1878. At Lismore, the line connected with the Duke of Devonshire owned line between Lismore and Fermoy, which in turn connected with the GS&WR owned line from Mallow to Fermoy, thereby creating a shorter link between Waterford and Cork, compared to the Limerick and Waterford Railway.

The company was later taken over by the Fishguard and Rosslare Railways and Harbours Company, which built a line from Waterford to Rosslare Harbour and a short line in Wales to complete a southern rail - sea - rail route between Britain and Ireland. The inclusion of a section of track in Wales was unfortunate as this prevented the merger of the F&RR&HCo into the Great Southern Railways and this anomaly exists to this day.
